It’s been said that if you want to know where you’ll be in a couple of years, look at who you are spending your time with today.
Are the people around you those who build you up and bring promise into your life?
Do they empower you to believe that you can reach higher, do better, and pursue your dreams and ambitions?
Put another way, do they add to your life through honesty and integrity, or are they attempting to selfishly hold you back for whatever reasons they may harbor?
These questions may seem geared for millennials or younger people.
However, if you have always felt in your heart that you are living beneath your potential, I am speaking to you, wherever you are in life.
If you are not spending your time with people who lift you up, then you are hanging around with the wrong people.
Do you feel stranded in the chaos of managing a household, working in a job you do not enjoy? Do you lack the flexibility to even catch your breath, let alone have the confidence to start that business you’ve always wanted to do?
If that sounds familiar, it’s time to reevaluate, starting with your friends and associates.
Do not be afraid to trim away people who sap your energy and whose influence keeps you living beneath what you can truly accomplish, whether it’s being a mother, businesswoman, a triathlete, or all of the above.
It may be difficult and a little painful to say adios to some people. There could be a little tension, but you’ll get through it and be better off for it.
When it comes to marriage or other intimate, close relationships, that’s different. These are deep commitments, lifelong relationships, therefore, working through the issues no matter what it takes, goes without saying.
Pardon the cliché, but a rising tide lifts all boats. Hearing words of encouragement can lift you emotionally like nothing else.
Hearing empowering words from someone close to you can generate just the spark you need to get moving in the direction of realizing your potential.
There will always be naysayers and those who warn against even trying to pursue your goals. Unless they are willing to make an attitude adjustment, you don’t need them in your life.
